Manage The Holiday Stress

Don't let the Holiday stress get you down.

The Holidays can be a stressful time for many of us, and that could be related to a multitude of things such as our jobs, our families, our health, or just simply not having enough time in the day to get everything done that we need to. Heck, the up and down weather of Kansas City can even put some stress on us. I think we all encounter some sort of stress during this time of the year that is supposed to be the happiest time of the year for us.

Its nearly impossible to eliminate all of the stress in our lives, but it's not impossible to do a few things to reduce the stress in our lives. Here are a few things that I want to share with you to help reduce the stress and manage it during this time of the year.

Many experts to the non-experts will always tell you the first thing to reduce stress will be exercise. However, during our busy schedules one of the first things to go out the window is our exercise program. I sure know I’m guilty of that, because I haven’t been to the gym in over 2 weeks. I can sure tell the difference in my moods and stress levels, so I need to get back in there. The important thing to remember if you are starting a new workout program is to pick something that you enjoy doing and is good for your body. The last thing you want to do is add extra stress to this situation, because you pick a workout routine that is something you don’t want to do and maybe even bad for your body. I injured my back a couple years back, and before that I would enjoy running 3 to 5 miles a day. However, since I injured my back those long runs aren’t the best for my body, so I have changed up the way I workout and do a lot more swimming in the pool and workouts that aren’t stressful on my body.

Healthy Diet

During this time of the year, its tough to follow a good diet with all the sweet goodies being delivered all over the place and all of the not so healthy Holiday meals that happen. However, when the body is being fed the right stuff I have noticed that my mind is a lot sharper and stress is reduced. The biggest thing that I have gotten in control over the years is my portions when I do partake in the sweet goodies and not so good for me Holiday meals, so I try to just eat smaller amounts. This really does help.

Overall Organization

We all have busy schedules this time of the year, and we are always bouncing around from Childrens Holiday programs to our family get togethers. There isn’t enough time in the day, and this causes a lot of stress on us. Especially, during the workday when new tasks get thrown on top of already a busy load of normal daily tasks. How do we manage it all? The best thing I have learned to do is to list out those tasks to make sure they do get done, because nothing adds more stress than when you forgot about a task that you learned about a couple weeks ago, but didn’t keep in the front of your mind and it didn’t get done. Make sure that doesn’t happen and add that stress, so keep those tasks front of mind on a list that you see everyday. Another thing that keeps the stress down for me at work is when I have a clean and organized desk. Right now, I have a bunch of reports I’m going through, (pictured below)

and I know I need to get this mess cleaned up. This just makes things easier when you're organized.

Of course, stress is going to happen to us all, but we can all try to reduce it. Let's try to do what we can, so we can all have a great Holiday season. Happy Holidays everyone!
