Manage The Holiday Stress

Don't let the Holiday stress get you down.

The Holidays can be a stressful time for many of us, and that could be related to a multitude of things such as our jobs, our families, our health, or just simply not having enough time in the day to get everything done that we need to. Heck, the up and down weather of Kansas City can even put some stress on us. I think we all encounter some sort of stress during this time of the year that is supposed to be the happiest time of the year for us.

Its nearly impossible to eliminate all of the stress in our lives, but it's not impossible to do a few things to reduce the stress in our lives. Here are a few things that I want to share with you to help reduce the stress and manage it during this time of the year.

Many experts to the non-experts will always tell you the first thing to reduce stress will be exercise. However, during our busy schedules one of the first things to go out the window is our exercise program. I sure know I’m guilty of that, because I haven’t been to the gym in over 2 weeks. I can sure tell the difference in my moods and stress levels, so I need to get back in there. The important thing to remember if you are starting a new workout program is to pick something that you enjoy doing and is good for your body. The last thing you want to do is add extra stress to this situation, because you pick a workout routine that is something you don’t want to do and maybe even bad for your body. I injured my back a couple years back, and before that I would enjoy running 3 to 5 miles a day. However, since I injured my back those long runs aren’t the best for my body, so I have changed up the way I workout and do a lot more swimming in the pool and workouts that aren’t stressful on my body.

Healthy Diet

During this time of the year, its tough to follow a good diet with all the sweet goodies being delivered all over the place and all of the not so healthy Holiday meals that happen. However, when the body is being fed the right stuff I have noticed that my mind is a lot sharper and stress is reduced. The biggest thing that I have gotten in control over the years is my portions when I do partake in the sweet goodies and not so good for me Holiday meals, so I try to just eat smaller amounts. This really does help.

Overall Organization

We all have busy schedules this time of the year, and we are always bouncing around from Childrens Holiday programs to our family get togethers. There isn’t enough time in the day, and this causes a lot of stress on us. Especially, during the workday when new tasks get thrown on top of already a busy load of normal daily tasks. How do we manage it all? The best thing I have learned to do is to list out those tasks to make sure they do get done, because nothing adds more stress than when you forgot about a task that you learned about a couple weeks ago, but didn’t keep in the front of your mind and it didn’t get done. Make sure that doesn’t happen and add that stress, so keep those tasks front of mind on a list that you see everyday. Another thing that keeps the stress down for me at work is when I have a clean and organized desk. Right now, I have a bunch of reports I’m going through, (pictured below)

and I know I need to get this mess cleaned up. This just makes things easier when you're organized.

Of course, stress is going to happen to us all, but we can all try to reduce it. Let's try to do what we can, so we can all have a great Holiday season. Happy Holidays everyone!

HVAC Scam Alert

Recently, a customer called us up, and wanted us to come out to check out their furnace. The customer said he was really worried, because another company came out (we won't name names) and this company told him that he was in deep danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. The company said he had a cracked heat exchanger, and the best thing he should do is buy a brand new furnace. We came out to this customers home, and we took a look at his furnace. We found that what the other company said was a crack was just a bend in the sheet metal. This bend is a very normal bend in the metal too. (see the images below for yourself)

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time we have heard of this trick, and it's a bummer that some companies out there feel like fear is the best technique to sell units. We calmed his nerves, and we tuned up his furnace for the Winter. Please watch out for this type of poor business tactic.

Save the life of your HVAC system, and save money on your utility bills

Spring time is now officially here, and it’s now the right time for an AC tune up. Why worry about getting an AC tune up? Well, an AC tune up is just as important as getting your teeth cleaned every six months at the dentist, or getting your car tuned up or getting an oil change every 3,000 miles. An average Kansas City home air conditioner runs for 1,200 hours every summer, so just as you would change that oil in your car you would want to tune up that AC or furnace before your cooling or heating season.

The difference between a system that gets tuned up regularly and a HVAC system that doesn’t is huge. When I say huge I mean in a huge money saving kind of way. We are talking about the difference between having to replace your whole HVAC system or just having a minor repair. For example, a tuned up air conditioner throughout the years normally just sees the need for minor repairs such as a capacitor needing replaced (which is a small repair.) A system that doesn’t get tuned up would see larger costly repairs such as a fan motor or compressor going bad which leads to having to buy a whole new AC or furnace. The average life of a HVAC system is 12 to 15 years of life, and the average life of a well tuned up system is 18 to 20 years. The difference is between hundreds of dollars vs. thousands of dollars. Also, a well tuned up system cuts the cost of your utility bills. Did you know that the last pound of Freon in your system is very important? If your just 1 pound low on Freon then that will cause 50% more runtime of your air conditioner, and that results to higher bills.

Our seasonal tune up program costs just $199 annually (or $118 of a onetime tune up visit), so you can see that it will save you money in the long run of your system. Call us today to schedule your HVAC system tune up.
